If you're installing DBC software for the first time, the minimum you should receive is:

What are "blocks"?

DBC distributes security devices or "blocks" that should be attached to your PC's parallel port. DBC programs these blocks with information about DBC applications. This information is used by DBC applications to determine whether or not users have permission to run a particular application.

In order to run DBC applications, the application must be able retrieve this information. In other words, you need a block that allows you to run your DBC application.

DBC records and references block by the block number. When you receive a block, note the block number on the block.

Installing under Microsoft Windows 95
  1. Install the block drivers.
  2. Install your DBC application.
  3. Reboot Windows 95.
  4. Now, you should be able to run your DBC application.

Installing under Microsoft Windows NT
  1. Log in with administrator privileges.
  2. Install the block drivers.
  3. Install your DBC application.
  4. Reboot Windows NT.
  5. Now, you should be able to run your DBC application.

Installing under Microsoft Windows 3.1
  1. Install the Win32s drivers only if you are installing a DBC Windows application.
  2. Install your DBC application.
  3. Now, you should be able to run your DBC application.

Troubleshooting
Most problems associated with running a newly installed DBC application are related to the installation of the block and the block drivers. Here are a few items to check.
  • The block may have been damaged due to a static electricity discharge or voltage spike.
  • If you inserted the block between the PC and a printer, make sure the printer is turned on and online.
  • The block may be attached to the serial port of the PC instead of the parallel port. The block should be attached to the PC with the pins going into the PC.
  • You may not have installed the necessary driver software. The block drivers have to be installed to run DBC applications under Microsoft Windows 95/NT. If you're running Microsoft Windows 3.1, you do not need to install the block drivers.
  • Make sure the parallel port is not damaged. Remove the block from the parallel port. Attach a printer directly to the parallel port and try to print through the parallel port. If you can not print through the parallel port, replace the port or add and configure a new parallel port.
  • The expiration date programmed in the block may have passed.
  • The parallel port configuration is not compatible. This problem usually occurs on laptop computers. Compatible parallel port configurations should be "Normal", AT, PS/2, bi-directional and ECP. EPP is usually an incompatible parallel port configuration.
  • The block may have been destroyed if it was attached to another device such as portable storage devices that are connected to parallel ports.
  • You may be able to determine if the block is damaged by attempting to run the DBC application using a different block that is able to run the application on another PC. If you have another PC running the DBC application, see if attaching using the suspect block also allows you to run the application on that PC.
  • Your block does not match the DBC application you're trying to run.
  • Do not attach multiple blocks to a PC linking them in a chain.
